The IA Longview’s 7th grade class attended the Living History Camp at Jefferson Civil War Days in April. The students enjoyed a steam train ride on the Historic Jefferson Railway while listening to the story of The Andrews Raid (The Great Locomotive Chase). They saw a replica ironclad civil war gunboat and one of the last standing Confederate powder magazines as they rode the train beside the Big Cypress Bayou.
They visited multiple educational stations and spoke with civil war reenactors and history enthusiasts. They learned about life during the civil war, cannons and ammunition used, different flags during that time, army structure (cavalry, infantry, artillery), and watched demonstrations of camp life and military activities.
